Two women in white dresses standing next to a red convertible car on a scenic road on the Moyenne Corniche, Cote d'Azur, wearing silk scarves of the Safavid tile design.

This design is from a pottery tile of the Safavid era, believed to date from the 17th Century. The tile was made with Stoneware: pottery where ground glass (frit) is added to clay to reduce its fusion temperature. Fritware was invented in the Medieval Islamic world to give a strong white body. Combined with tin-glazing the surface it could emulate the qualities of Chinese porcelain. The tile (one of a pair) is now part of the Bennett-Farahbod Collection of Persian Art.
