Pashan

This image represents the beginning of the epic Battle of Pashan, between the Persians and Turanians. It derives from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) by the 11th Century Persian poet Abu'l Qasim Firdausi. The Persians fight under the red banner of Kava, the symbolic apron of the blacksmith who rebelled against the tyrant Zahhak.

The original painting, attributed to the 16th Century Persian artist ‘Abd al Vahhab, is now in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
