Concourse of the Birds

This is an illustration of a scene from a mystical poem, Mantiq al-tair (Language of the Birds), written by the 12th Century Persian poet, Farid al-Din Attar. The birds symbolize individual souls in search of the simurgh (a mystical bird representing spiritual unity) under the leadership of a hoopoe.

The original drawing, believed to be by Habiballah of Sava in the early 17th Century, is now in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
