Maison Nazanin - Chowgan - 100% Silk Scarf

The scarf is based on a Persian miniature painting of Persian princes and noblemen playing Chowgan, a game where horse riders pursue a ball with sticks. This game was invented in Persia and popular in India. It was played not just by men but by women too. This was the precursor to the game of Polo, which was introduced to Britain from the era of the Raj in India.

The painting is by Qasim Ibn Ali, depicting a scene described by Ferdausi in the Shahnama, according to which the Turanian king Afrasiyab had suggested a game of polo and Siyavush had accepted, requesting, however, that he be allowed Iranian players for his team, as Turanians would not play their hardest against their own king. Afrasiyab agreed and was wonderfully impressed with the outstanding skill of Siyavush as a player and horseman. Like the other Iranians, Siyavush wears a tall baton, or taj, in his turban. He is the player on the black horse in the center of the field; Afrasiyab, mounted, watches from the horizon. The original painting is in the possession of Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
